Jammu, Nov 13 (UNI) The National Conference will soon convene the party's parliamentary board to name its candidate for the Poonch assembly seat, where by-election is scheduled on December 12, sources today said.
The National Conference (NC) held a high level meeting of senior leaders, chaired by its president Omar Abdullah, to formulate a strategy for the ensuing by-election.
''The meeting of the NC leaders ended with the decision that the parliamentary board will convene soon to take a final decision regarding the candidate for the Poonch by-election,'' a party source told UNI.
The party president solicited the views of the participants representing various cross sections and decided the whole strategy.
The NC has witnessed an in house divide over the party nominee for the Poonch Legislative Assembly seat, which had fallen vacant after the death NC MLA, Ghulam Mohammad Jaan.
According to sources, son of late Mr Ghulam Mohammad Jaan, Aijaz Jaan, is the choice of NC president Omar Abdullah for the Poonch seat, while party patron and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah wants Dr Shahnaz Ganai for the constituency seat.
Dr Ganai is the daughter of Ghulam Mohammad Ganai, who had served the NC for decades. Dr Genai had quit her job claiming that she had been invited by Dr Abdullah to join the NC and contest from the Poonch constituency.
Besides these two candidates, a senior NC leader, Choudhary Bashir Naaz, who is representing the party in the Legislative Council, is also fighting hard to get green signal for the Poonch seat from the party high command, sources added.
