Congress supports Prof Baban Taiwade as its candidate

Nagpur, Nov 12 (UNI) The Congress today named senior academician Prof Baban Taiwade as its candidate for elections to the Nagpur graduates constituency of the Maharashtra Legislative Council, to be held next year.

The elections to the constituency are likely to be held in July next year, but the party announced its candidature as enlisting graduates as voters is a time-consuming procedure and requires some time, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Prabha Rau said.

Addressing newsmen here, Ms Rau hoped that the internal differences in the local Congress unit would not affect the party's prospects in the polls. Though the constituency is considered to be a BJP stronghold, the party has a good chance of winning the elections, she claimed.

Interstingly, the BJP state unit chief Nitin Gadkari has won three successive elections from this constituency.

Prof Taiwade, a senior academician and senate member of Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University, was also present at the press meet. He exuded confidence about his chances in the elections.
