CCEA approves MEP Scheme for NE

The
Cabinet
Committee
on
Economic
Affairs
(CCEA)
has
approved
the
project
for
implementation
of
a
Centrally
Sponsored
Scheme
on
Marketing
and
Export
Promotion
(SMEP)
during
the
11th
Plan
period
in
Northeastern
states.
Official sources said here today tha the CCEA had granted the project of Rs 230 crore and assured to support the Marketing and Export Promotion Scheme in two components- Marketing Promotion and Handlooms Export Promotion.
According to proposal the states would organise Exhibitions, Events and Craft Melas besides, set up Urban Haats, Marketing Complexes, introduce Geographical Indication for public awareness and Handlooms Marketing Complexes.
Meanwhile, under Handlooms Export Promotion project the states would organise International Fairs and Exhibitions and set up of Design Studios, sources stated.
With the assistance under the scheme, more than 27 lakh handloom weavers would able to increase their sales of handloom products in the domestic markets and get exposure to international markets, sources added.
