Mumbai, Nov 7 (UNI) A retrospective on the works of legendary filmmaker Tapan Sinha was held at the ongoing Third Eye Sixth Asian Film Festival at three different venues across the city today.

Some of his films that were showcased included 'Hungry Stones', 'Sagina Mahato', 'Kabuliwala' and 'Ek doctor Ki Maut'.

'Ek Doctor Ki Maut', which stars powerhouse performers like Shabana Azmi, Pankaj Kapur, Irfan Khan, Deepa Sahi and Vijendra Ghadge, is the story of a doctor who after painstaking research at the cost of his life discovers a vaccine for leprosy. The news is flashed and overnight a junior doctor receives an international recognition. Professional jealousy and abuse of power threaten Dr Roy even as the secretary of Health reprimands him for breaking the news to the press.

Sinha got the National award as Best Director for this film, where a doctor is compelled to commit suicide as a result of an incompassionate system which denies due recognition to his talent.

The film also won the National award for the Second Best Feature Film.

Sinha has won 19 National awards in different categories of cinema. As an excellent narrator, he structured and crafted his films in such a manner that it could simultaneously earn popular support and intellectual appreciation at the same time. His outstanding creations spanning more than five decades have established a place for him in the history of world cinema.
