Special compensation for kin of UP cops killed in action

Lucknow, Nov 6 (UNI) The Uttar Pradesh government today announced that family members of police personnel killed in action would get a special compensation, besides the regular ex gratia.

Chief Minister Mayawati has decided that kin of officials of sub-inspector and above level would be granted Rs 5 lakh if the official is killed in action. Similarly, kin of constables and head constables would get Rs 3 lakh. ''The CM decided to grant the amount for policemen who go beyond the call of duty,'' state Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters here.

The decision was taken after a station officer was killed in Hardoi today where he had gone to nab an accused. In another incident, a constable was killed in Meerut this morning when angry villagers stoned the police party which had gone to free a 'baraat' held hostage by the bride's family.
