One killed, 4 injured in political clashes

Kannur, Nov 5 (UNI) A CPI(M) worker was hacked to death and four others injured in different political clashes in the district today.

According to police, Sudheer (32), a CPI(M) sympathiser was hacked to death, allegedly by RSS activists at Kavumbagam, near Thalassery in the district this evening.

The murder was a retaliation to the attack on a BJP worker Ayyappan Shaji (29), who was allegedy hacked by CPI(M) cadre at Kolasserry earlier in the day.

The political clashes between the CPI(M) and the BJP began, following an attack on Sherin, a BJP worker at Punnol two days back, sources said.

In retaliation, a CPI(M) worker, Shimith was hacked at Eranjoli, allegedly by the BJP workers and in the counter-attack a BJP worker, Sreejith, was also injured.

In another incident, a CPI(M) worker, M Jasin (29), was hacked allegedly by RSS activists at Kundu Chira at Thalassery in the afternoon. He was admitted to the Thalassery Co-operative Hospital with severe injuries.

Earlier, Kerala Students Union (KSU) State Secretary K Binoj (26) was hacked, allegedly by SFI activists, at S N Park near here. He was later shifted to a private hospital at Kozhikode with serious injuries.

Tension prevailed in Kavumbagam, Eranjoli, Kodakkal, New Mahe and Punnol following the clashes and more forces were deployed to bring the situation under control, the sources said.

Superintendent of Police, Kannur, Mathew Policarp told UNI that the situation was under control and raids were on to nab the culprits.

However, no arrests were made so far, he added.
