UPOCCA against 'democracy' and 'human rights': CPI

Lucknow, Nov 2 (UNI) Listing the flaws of the proposed Uttar Pradesh Organised Crime Control Act (UPOCCA) bill, the Communist Party of India (CPI) today said the bill was against 'democracy' and 'human rights.' ''Chief Minister Mayawati is trying to create a situation akin to emergency by implimenting the UPOCCA, '' state secretary K N Bhatt said in a statement here.

Lambasting Ms Mayawati for adopting ''autocratic behaviour,'' Mr Bhatt observed, ''her government is only crushing the rights of people through these steps.'' The existing law was capable enough to regulate both organised and unorganised crime in the state...therefore, no need arises for the bill's implementation, he said, adding, ''Ms Mayawati is only working with a feeling of revenge towards other political leaders...this is the only aim of bringing UPOCCA in the state,''.
