SC to hear appeal in Jessica Lal murder case on Nov 27

New Delhi, Nov 2 (UNI) The Supreme Court will hear on November 27 appeal of Siddharth Vasisht alias Manu Sharma against his conviction and sentence in Jessica Lal murder case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice R V Raveendran today fixed the date after the appeal was mentioned for early hearing before the bench.

The court also permitted Manu Sharma, son of former Haryana minister Vinod Sharma, to file an application for suspension of his sentence and for grant of bail and the same shall be considered by the court on November 27.

The acquittal of Manu Sharma by trial Judge S L Bhayana who is presently the judge of Delhi High Court, had led to huge public outcry.

The Delhi High Court however, reversed the order of acquittal and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Model Jessica Lal was shot dead in April 1999 after she refused to serve liquor at Mehrauli restaraunt-cum-bar owned by socialite Bina Ramani.

Manu Sharma and his friends had demanded liquor after midnight when the bar had already been closed.

Vikas Yadav, main accused in Nitish Katara murder case, has also been given four year imprisonment in case for destroying evidence.

Sharma in his appeal has contended that High Court had committed a mistake by interfering with the order of acquittal without any compelling reasons.

His appeal has already been admitted by the apex court for hearing.
