NRSE electrifies remote village in Andaman Islands

Port Blair, Nov 02 (UNI) The New and Renewable Sources of Energy (NRSE) division of the Andaman and Nicobar Electricity department has completed the electrification of the remote village Lewis-in-Let Bay under the North and Middle Andaman district.

An official release of the Andaman and Nicobar administration said here today that the village was electrified through solar photovoltaic home systems and solar photovoltaic street lights under the New and Renewable Sources of Energy scheme.

The team of NRSE technicians travelled 16 km by road from Tugapur, Mayabunder, and then one and a half hours by sea route to reach the isolated police camp, the release added.

The villagers expressed their gratitude to the Electricity department for completing the project.

''We never thought our far-flung island would get electricity so early,'' Haren Das, a villager, said.

The NRSE division is the nodal agency of the Non-Conventional Energy Sources Ministry at New Delhi and implements various schemes of renewable energy sources.

Remote village electrification through solar home systems and solar street lights is one of the programmes under the scheme, the release added.
