Rs 76.93 lakh off-season assistance for fisherfolk

Pudukkottai, Nov 1: As many as 6,411 fisherfolks in the district, including 1,373 fisherwomen, will be paid an off-season assistance totalling Rs 76.93 lakh during the current season.

In a statement here today, District Collector D Uthirakkumaran said the distribution of assistance had commenced at Manamelgudi.

He said a sum of Rs 1.91 crore had been distributed to tsunami-hit fishermen, while Rs 75.26 lakh had been spent towards additional assistance for fishermen in the district.

Fisheries Department sources said an off-season assistance of Rs 5.02 crore would be distributed to fishermen in Nagappattinam district from September to December under the National Fishermen Savings and Relief Scheme.
