Rangasamy asks parents not to send children to work

Puducherry, Oct 31 (UNI) Stating that it is cruelty on the part of parents to send their children to work and earn livelihood out of their wages, Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy today suggested slapping penalty on such parents.

Inaugurating a seven-day awareness programme on 'Ban on Child Labour' jointly organised by the Labour department of the administration and Holistic Approach for People's Empowerment (HOPE) here, Mr Rangasamy said children were entitled to get their education. Engaging children for work is punishable under law, he added.

The Chief Minister said children should be given education up to Standard-Eight and in order to ensure this, the administration had introduced the compulsory education scheme in the union territory.

The Government was also implementing several schemes for the students to enable the children to get their education, he added.

He said the number of child labourers are meagre here and the administration was taking steps to identify the children and admit them in the schools.
