Chennai, Nov 1 (UNI) The Chennai City Police today directed cracker shop owners not to store more than 1,000 kg of fire crackers in their shops.

Talking to reporters here today, City Police Commissioner Nanjil Kumaran said action would be taken against those violating the rules.

The shopkeepers should also take proper safety measures in the shops to prevent any untoward incident.

He appealed to the public not to burst crackers after 2200 hrs. ''This will be enforced strictly,'' he added.

Mr Kumaran said police have stepped up up security all over the city in view of the festival season.

Watchtowers would be erected at all vantage points to monitor the movement of anti-social elements and police personnel on patrol duty with loudspeakers would announce the public to take precautions while bursting crackers.
