Puducherry, Nov 1 (UNI) Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz today conferred Ms Jaya Muralidharan, Member, Sinchan Sahyog, Aurangabad, with the Jain-INCID award-2007 (Sookshma Sinchai Puraskar) at the 12th National Water Convention here.

The award comprising a cheque of Rs 51,000, plaque and a citation, was presented to Ms Muralidharan in recognition for her contribution to sustainable agriculture farming.

According to a release from the Indian National Committee on Irrigation and Drainage(INCID), Ms Muralidharan had developed 80 hectares of barren land into a productive multi-functionality agriculture farm.

The water management, integrated with rainwater harvesting, was accomplished through systematic planning and design of surface drainage network. Drip irrigation technique used in the farm had helped in maximising yield and income, the release said.

INCID, in association with Jain Charities, Jalgaon, had instituted the award to honour individuals or groups making significant contributions towards the development of modern technology in the field of irrigation, drainage and water management-related subjects.

Speaking at the convention, Prof Soz lauded the simplicity of Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, and said, ''I am meeting and shaking hands with him for the first time.'' 'I heard that he (Mr Rangasamy) used to travel on a motorcyle and freely mingle with the people. I salute his simplicity,'' Soz said.
