3% quota for disabled: Monaj Kumar

Shillong, Nov 01: Chief Commissioner for persons with disabilities Monaj Kumar has stressed the need to strictly aportion three per cent reservation in educational institution and Government departments for disabled persons.

To address grievances of disabled persons soon, a one-day mobile court was organised at the Soso Tham Auditorium here yesterday.

Speaking to reporters he informed that the court had also directed the Education Department to update the backlong vaccancies since 1996 in the state. He asked the departments to ensure that the quota for persons with disabilities was filled without fail.

Mr Kumar said the main objective of the mobile court was to reach out to the people and streamline the system of the government while adding that the Union Ministry of social justice and empowerment had already conducted similar courts in Aizawl last Friday. Similar programmes are slated for Gangtok and Namchi.

Altogether 44 cases were heard of which necessary action was taken on the spot.

A suo motu case was also registered for providing barrier free environment for person with disabilities in all the seven districts of the state.
