Chandigarh, Oct 30 (UNI) The Punjab government is fully geared to solve the problems of women who were being harassed by their NRI husbands, said Principal Secretary Home Dr BC Gupta today.

The NRI cell of the state government would be further strengthened to redress the grievances of the NRI wives, Dr Gupta said while presiding over a high level meeting to take stock of the probem.

He pointed out that relevant information would be made available on the website of the NRI Cell to the advantage of the harassed lot.

Mr Gupta said that a provision to record all the details of the marriage certificates along with the compulsory registration of the marriage was being seriously looked into.

He also appealed the voluntary organisations to take up the cause of the deserted NRI wives for the quick redressal of their grievances. He however, said that legal remedy was not enough to tackle this problem rather it could be solved at the social level through creating awareness amongst the masses.

Speaking at the meeting, Indian Council of Social Welfare vice president J K Grewal raised the issue of compulsory registration of the marriage, complete details of the marriage certificate and necessary legal assistance to the deserted wives.
