Government appoints protection officers in Delhi and 28 states

New Delhi, Oct 30 (UNI)The Ministry of Women and Child Development requested all the State Governments and the Union Territories to put necessary administrative arrangements in place immediately for the implementation of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act.

Addressing newspersons here today, Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Choudhary said the Act will protect women and children from domestic violence.

She said for the first time the implementation of a law has been reviewed on the completion of just one year. No other law has been reviewed in this manner despite they are being in force since a long time.

Ms Choudhary said as per the report and information avalable in the Ministry, almost all States/UTs have appointed Protection Officers. In six States, service providers have been registered.

However, inspite of infrastructure not completely being in place Women started to come out and as many as 7913 cases have been registered under this Act she said.

She said though there have been challenges to the Constitutional validity of the Act in the High Courts of few States, the act has brought relief to the victims of domestic violence.

Some groups have also called for toning down of the provisions of the Act, the Ministry of Women and Child development has, however, not favoured any such dilution, she informed.

During the 11th plan, the Ministry proposes to give wider dissemination to the provisions of the law and also to strengthen the infrastructure to make the Act effective, she added.

The Minister further disclosed that the Government has already appointed protection officers in 28 States and in the Union Teritory of Delhi.

Necessary directions have been issued to all gazetted officers, inspectors, SHOs and deputy district attorneys and in-charge of all crime against women cells for necessary action, Ms Choudhary added.
