ATC official, parents booked for attempt to murder

Nagpur, Oct 29 (UNI) An official working with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Nagpur airport and his parents have been booked on charges of harassment and attempt to murder of his wife, the police said today.

According to the police, those booked have been identified as Saugat Narhari Pramanik (37), Assistant General Manager (ATC), his mother Vijaya and his father Narhari. The three were booked after Saugat's wife Maitreyi told the police that he had tried to kill her by pushing her with his elbow off a motorcycle that they were riding a few weeks ago.

Maitreyi also told the police that her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law had been harassing her mentally and physically ever since their marriage in 2000.

Maitreyi had sustained grievous injuries as a result of the fall from the bike earlier this month, and had fainted, the police said.

The police recorded her statement late last week while she was undergoing treatment at a local hospital, they said.

Initially, on the basis of a complaint by Maitreyi's brother Ujjwalkumar Maranchand Das, the police had booked Pramanik for reckless driving. An offence had been registered under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the police said.

However, after Maitreyi's statement, sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) had been added to the offence, they said.

Further investigations were on, but no arrests had been made so far. Pramanik and his parents had obtained anticipatory bail, police added.
