Giridih, Oct 27: In one of the deadliest naxal-sponsored attacks in Jharkhand, former chief minister Babulal Marandi's son Anup Marandi were among the 16 people killed in Chalkhari village of this district of Jharkhand early today.

Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar said about 35-40 armed ultras, carrying sophisticated arms and ammunition, swooped on scores of unaware people, engrossed in a cultural programme, ill-equipped to protect themselves and fired indiscrimminately.

Apart from those killed in the attack, two others were seriously wounded.

However, Mr Marandi's brother Munnilal, who was instrumental in launching a campaign against the insurgency, have survived the attack with minor injuries.

Munnilal, through his relentless efforts, was able to rope in the underground elements with few of them surrendering before the government.

The cultural show was organised at the end of five-day soccer tournament at the village under Deuri police station.

The bereaved father of the 23-year-old Anup Marandi, who married a few months ago, said the ultras were targetting him but could not succeed so far due to security.

Mr Marandi, however, admitted that his family members should not have been present at the function so late into the night.
