J'khand: Naxalites kill Ex-CM Marandi's son

one
of
the
deadliest
naxal-sponsored
attacks
in
Jharkhand,
former
chief
minister
Babulal
Marandi's
son
Anup
Marandi
were
among
the
16
people
killed
in
Chalkhari
village
of
this
district
of
Jharkhand
early
today.
Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar said about 35-40 armed ultras, carrying sophisticated arms and ammunition, swooped on scores of unaware people, engrossed in a cultural programme, ill-equipped to protect themselves and fired indiscrimminately.

Apart
from
those
killed
in
the
attack,
two
others
were
seriously
wounded.
However, Mr Marandi's brother Munnilal, who was instrumental in launching a campaign against the insurgency, have survived the attack with minor injuries.
Munnilal, through his relentless efforts, was able to rope in the underground elements with few of them surrendering before the government.
The cultural show was organised at the end of five-day soccer tournament at the village under Deuri police station.
The bereaved father of the 23-year-old Anup Marandi, who married a few months ago, said the ultras were targetting him but could not succeed so far due to security.
Mr Marandi, however, admitted that his family members should not have been present at the function so late into the night.
