STs born outside Lakshadweep to retain status: Cabinet

New Delhi, Oct 25 (UNI) The government today decided to amend the Constitution to enable those who are born to inhabitants of Lakshadweep in any other part of India to retain the Scheduled Tribe status in the islands.

This would benefit the children of STs of Lakshadweep who have been residing away from the islands due to medical, educational or job requirements, resulting in their children having been born in the mainland.

The decision was taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi told reporters.
