Subarnarekha project to irrigate 1.9 lakh hectares

Bhubaneswar, Oct 23 (UNI) The Rs 1756 crore inter-state Subarnarekha irrigation Project will irrigate 1.9 lakh hectares of land in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts in Orissa.

Orissa Water Resources Secretary Arabinda Behera told newsmen here that a sum of Rs 250 crore would be spent this year for the project.

He said the Joint Executive Committee meeting held at Jasmshedpur on September 29 decided that out of the Rs 250 crore Orissa would give Rs 105 crore to Jharkhand for the completion of the Galudihi project and construction of the main canal from Galudihi upto Orissa border in Mayurbhanja district.

Mr Behera said the canal was scheduled to be completed by December 2008.

He said the entire project on completion will provide irrigation facilities to 1 lakh and 9000 hectares of land in Mayurbhanja and Balasore District at a cost of Rs 3000 crore.

While 61,800 hectares of land would brought under irrigation in Mayuirbhanj by 2009-10 in the first phase in the second phase the rest of land would be provided irrigation facilities in Balasore district.
