New Delhi, Oct 22 (UNI) Union Shipping, Road Transport and Highways Minister T R Baalu has approved a sum of Rs 475.01 lakh for road improvement works in Tamil Nadu.

An amount of Rs 238.66 lakh has been approved for improvement of Riding Quality (RQ) work on NH-49 between Madurai and Silaiman village, which is a highway connecting Madurai and Dhanuskodi.

A ministry official said the volume of vehicular traffic is very high on this stretch of NH-49.

''Due to stagnation of water, several vertical and horizontal cracks have developed on the riding surface. Hence it was considered necessary to take up this stretch for immediate repairs,'' he said.

Mr Baalu also approved Rs 236.35 lakh for improvement of Riding Quality work on the same highway between Usilampatti and Andipatti Kanavai Medu in Madurai district. This highway connects the temple city of Madurai and harbour city of Cochin.

''It is reported that this stretch of the road is sunken, undulated and potholes have formed due to the recent monsoon.

Therefore, for smooth and safe vehicular traffic, it is essential to improve the riding surface on this stretch of the National Highway,'' the official said.
