Woman dies after setting hereself on fire

Junagadh, Oct 18 (UNI) A 30-year-old woman, wife of an army jawan, succumbed to her burn injuries in a local hospital today after she attempted to commit suicide allegedly by setting herself ablaze in her house owing to taunts by her three sister-in-laws.

The woman, identified as Savita alias Vijaya Bhanu Makwana, yesterday doused herself with kerosene and set herself on fire in her house at Balot village of Vanthali taluka, about 25 km from here, as she could not bear the adverse remarks passed by her three sister-in-laws.

Her husband, Bhanu Hira Makwana, is in the army and posted at Jamnagar. Her elderly sister-in-laws Ratan, Labhu and Kanta were daily accusing her of immoral behaviour and used to cast aspersions on her two-year-old son, police said.

Police said the three used to taunt her that her son, Sanjay, was born out of illegal intimacy. Savita was married for the past 11 years and had a daughter. In her dying declaration, she told the police about the mental torture that she was subjected to daily by the three sisters-in-law.

An FIR under section 498 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the three women, police added.
