Agartala, Oct 18: The Agartala Press Club today expressed serious concern over the suspension of newspaper publications in Manipur following threat from underground outfits and demanded action against the militants.

In a letter to Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, Agartala Press Club Secretary Pranab Sarkar sought his intervention in the latest development in Manipur. He also sought protection of media persons.

Terming the militant's move as dangerous to democracy, Mr Sarkar said, ''Media is playing a vital role in safeguarding our vibrant democracy and it has been proved already that the Manipur government is either unable or lacks the political will to face the situation.'' Since last week the entire print media in Imphal was forced to suspend publication practically at gunpoint by various banned outfits.

A copy of the letter had also been sent to the union information and broadcasting minister, the Press Council of India Chairman and the Manipur chief minister seeking their intervention to overcome the crisis.
