Court declares election of MCD councillor null and void

New Delhi, Oct 18 (UNI) A local court today declared the election of an MCD councillor as null and void after holding him guilty of making fake entries at the time of filing of nominations.

Acting on a petition filed by one Premnath, Additional District magistrate Kamini Lau declared the election of Surjeet Singh to the post of Councillor from ward no 12 under GTB Nagar Constitutency, as untenable.

Premnath had alleged that Singh had witheld the information about his being an MCD contractor at the time of filing of nominations.

Hence, he was not eligible for taking part in the election process at all, he had submitted.

The court found that Singh had given his resignation from the post of contractor, in a back-dated application, only after he was elected as Councillor.

The Court asked the MCD Commissioner to conduct an inquiry into how the fake entries and manipulations were made into the MCD registers and submit a report on the findings within two months.

The judge also asked the political parties to be more careful about the antecedents of the candidates at the time of giving tickets for any election.
