ADB to assist J&K in power sector

Srinagar, Oct 18 (UNI) Manila-based Asian Development Bank (ADB) today assured the Jammu and Kashmir government of full cooperation for development of hydel power potential, system improvement programmes and capacity building of various institutions.

A high-level ADB team called on Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad here this morning to explore possibilities for availing financial and technical assistance from the Bank for improvement in the power sector, including implementation of new hydel projects, in the state.

Mr Azad emphasised the need for a long-term relationship of the ADB with the Power Development Department for harnessing the huge available hydel power potential in Jammu and Kashmir.

The ADB, team led by Director Energy, South Asia Division, Theva Kumar Kandiah, assured the Chief Minister of full cooperation to the state government for development of hydel power potential, system improvement programmes and capacity building of various State institutions, including the Power Development Corporation.

Among others present on the occasion included ADB Principal Energy Economist Piya Abey Gunawardana and ADB Energy Economist Andrew Jefferies.
