Central Groundwater team tours Punjab's water logged areas

Muktsar, Oct 17 (UNI) The Central Groundwater Board (CGB) has identified 60 villages in Muktsar and Faridkot districts which are facing problems of water logging that has had adverse effects on agriculture in these two states.

A three member team of CGB today toured the water logged areas of the districts and suggested certain remedial measures that need to be adopted for containing this problem. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Irrigation Minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon and Irrigation Secretary Suresh Kumar accompanied the team on the tour.

Mr Badal on his part has assured the CGB team and the people of the area that there would no shortage of funds to tackle this problem that had effected the livelihood of the people of the area particularly the farmers.

The CGB has asked the government to immediately pump out the water from the fields into the seasonal drains. The team took note of the poor upkeep of the seasonal drains and suggested that these must be cleaned and brick lined.

The team will remain in the area tomorrow also and would thereafter prepare a detailed action plan for the government.
