Ancient gold coins found in Bastar village

Jagdalpur, Oct 17 (UNI) Eight ancient gold coins bearing the image of Lord Buddha were recovered from a school student in a Bastar village, police said today.

The coins were collected by the student during excavation work for constructing a road at village Kokled village near Sonarpal in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh. Police recovered it on Monday.

Meanwhile, few other children also collected such coins, but their parents threw it in a pond fearing the wrath of some evil spirits, police said, adding further investigations were on.

During the 11th and 12th century, Sonarpal was part of the kingdom of Nagvanshi rulers and they had minted coins bearing the image of Lord Buddha, according to historian K K Jha.
