Tripura sad over demise of singer Meera

Agartala, Oct 16 (UNI) Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Cultural Minster Anil Sarkar today expressed grief over the demise of Meera Dev Burman, renowned singer and widow of legendary music director Sachin Dev Burman in Mumbai yesterday.

She had been suffering from a prolonged illness.

In separate condolence messages, both the ministers said the Burman family had enthralled the music world and carried forward the cultural customs of Tripura across the world.

The Chief Minister, the Cultural Minister and Cultural Department Director Subhas Das along with the officials, researchers and cultural community of the state offered condolence to the family.

S D Burman, born in the royal family of Tripura, fell in love with Meera when he met her at All India Music Conference in Allahabad in 1937. Meera become Burman's student and later married him.

The 101st birth anniversary of S D Burman was celebrated in a befitting manner by Tripura government.

On September 15, Information and Cultural Minister Anil Sarkar had visited an ailing Meera and presented her with a cheque of Rs 100,000.
