Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary to be declared as a community reserve
Kozhikode, Oct 16 (UNI) The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary and estuary, home to more than a hundred varieties of native and several varieties of migratory birds, will be declared a community reserve on October 18.
Kerala Forests Minister Binoy Viswam would make a formal announcemnt to this effect at a function at Kadalundi, 19 km from here, Kadalundi Gram Panchayat President O Bhaktavalsalan told reporters here today.
After being declared as community reserve, perhaps the first of its kind in the country, the locality would attain the status of a specially protected area, he said.
Indian Union Muslim League leader Kutty Ahamed Kutty, MLA, Malappuram district, Collector Sumana N Menon and other senior officials would be present at the function, he said.
Also known for a wide variety of fish, mussels and crabs, the sanctuary was visited by over 60 species of migratory birds from Siberia, Antartica, Australia and Europe from November to April.
