Panaji, Oct 16 (UNI) The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has directed the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) to stop the work on its waste treatment plant being set up at the Patto EDC complex immediately since it is not authorised by the Board.

Acting on a complaint by advocate Aires Rodrigues representing the LIC Employees Union, the GSPCB said that the anaerobic digester for treating the wet waste being dumped by the CCP had no authorisation from the Board and hence the work must be stopped.

The complainant had also urged the CRZ authorities to inspect the site to ascertain whether the plant located near the Patto creek had violated the regulations.

It had brought to the notice of the authorities that the CCP, despite the Board's directive on October 10, continued to dump garbage near the complex where several public sector offices including those of BSNL, LIC, IDC, Customs, Passport and others were located.

This had left an unbearable stench. Besides, for the last two years garbage was being dumped with impunity even as the Board had directed the North Goa Collector to initiate immediate action to stop the dumping.

Meanwhile, the complaint of the LIC employees, treated as the Public Interest Litigation by the Panaji Bench of the Bombay High Court here, will come up for hearing tomorrow on the garbage issue.
