Shillong, Oct 15 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapang today suggested constituting a committee to submit a report on handing over the Defence Ministry's unsued defence land for public purpose.
Addressing the House, the Chief Minister said, ''There is a need to set up the committee as there is vast unoccupied land not being utilised by the Army.'' He said the total area of land belonging to the Defence authorities in and around Shillong was about 2,412 acres.
The state government had urged the Defence Ministry several times at the ministerial and official levels to give up the land unutilised by the Defence authorities for other purposes, Mr Lapang said.
The state government had obtained some specific plots for use in public interest, he said, adding that the matter was being looked into by the Defence Ministry.
