Guwahati, Oct 13 (UNI) Security has been tightened across Assam on the occasion of Eid tomorrow, official sources said here today.

Guwahati Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surinder Kumar said, ''We have taken adequate security measures for peaceful celebration of Eid tomorrow.'' He, however, refused to term the measures 'special' and said such security steps were taken during any major celebrations.

''The security is adequate and we are monitoring closely so that no disruptions take place,'' the SSP added.

Mr Kumar said besides deploying police personnel at all religious sites in the city, traffic would be regulated and parking areas closely monitored.

Police would also work closely with Eid celebration and mosque committees and volunteers would be deployed for peaceful celebrations, he added.

The mosque at Machkhowa area of the city had witnessed several blasts in the recent past, with the latest being on June 23 in which six people were killed.

The sources said security in other parts of Assam had also been strengthened and security agencies were monitoring all sites of Eid celebrations to thwart any untoward incident.

The coming festive season has put the security agencies on alert in view of intelligence reports that car bombs were likely to be used as part of militant strikes during the month.
