Mumbai, Oct 12 (UNI) Crime Branch of Mumbai Police today arrested a man from Lalubhai compound in Mankhurd, a eastern suburb, for allegedly kidnapping a woman and her son, hailing from Haridwar in Uttaranchal.

Police Inspector Suryakant Talekar, attached to Crime Branch unit-IX, told UNI here that the accused, Bhupendra Kumar Varma (22), had kidnapped Ganga Dayaram Choudhary and her two-year-old son Lalit from Haridwar, and demanded Rs two crore as ransom for their release from the family.

The accused was recently released on bail in another kidnapping case of Uttaranchal.

Meanwhile, the victim's family registered a complaint with Haridwar police station. In the meantime, Uttaranchal police arrested four associates of Varma. But, Varma successfully escaped from Haridwar and brought the victims to Mumbai.

After coming to Mumbai, the accused again called the family members from a PCO and demanded the ransom.

The family members again informed the Haridwar police.

Accordingly, Haridwar police informed to Mumbai Police on the basis of telephone number. The woman and her son were rescued today from his custody, he added.

Haridwar police have already arrived here to take the accused in their custody and they will take him to Uttaranchal tomorrow on a transit remand, he stated.
