Cops have social responsibility: CM
Chennai, Oct 13 (UNI) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today exhorted police to become social activists by taking up public work besides maintaining law and order in the state.
Declaring open here 907 police quarters costing Rs 43.13 crore, he said the responsibility of the police did not stop with detecting crimes and maintaining law and order.
The police should not have the tendency of feeling they belonged to the Police Department and that their job was only to prevent and detect crimes.
He had always felt the police had a social responsibility and should wake up to the needs of the society.
Fulfilling his wishes, the city police personnel recently became social activists and cleared garbage in the city, he recalled while congratulating them for making the city clean.
When the situation demanded, the police personnel should involve themselves in public service and develop an attitude to serve the people and the society.
He had readily agreed to participate in the function to express his thanks and gratitude to the police for having cleaned up the city, Mr Karunanidhi said.
If the police had cleaned up the city, the Corporation and the people had the responsibility to keep the city clean and help the government make it a beautiful metropolis, he added.
