Chandigarh, Oct 13 (UNI) Former chief minister, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal today formally assumed charge of the faction ridden Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) with a vow to bring down the Shirmoni Akali Dal (SAD)-BJP government, which she alleged had let loose a reign of repression against Congress leaders and workers instead of working for the welfare of the masses.

"The SAD-BJP government is no big challenge to the Congress which had uprooted the Britishers from the country and had crushed terrorism in Punjab", Mrs Bhattal said while addressing an impressive public rally at the Punjab Congress Bhawan here during her installation ceremony as PPCC president.

Accusing the SAD-BJP government of pursuing 'vendetta politics' against the Congress, she sought to make it clear that her party would not take it lying down. " We will launch a democratic movement to put an end to such repressive measures" , she said.

Mrs Bhattal, who is also the leader of the opposition neither named former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh nor any other Congress leader against whom cases of corruption had been registered after the SAD-BJP took over the reins of the state. However later at a press conference she sought to assure all her party leaders and workers that the Congress would support them in their fight against the state government.

She sought to assure every Congress worker that she would stand by every Congress worker in the hour of crisis. However at the same time she asked her workers to identify themselves in public by holding aloft the Congress flag rather than concealing their identifies to escape from the atrocities of the state government.
