Many injured in group clash

Madurai, Oct 12 (UNI) Several people, including five women, were injured, four of them seriously in a clash between two groups of villagers over previous enmity near Thirumangalam in the district today.

Police said Urappanur Panchayat Union President Bhaskara Sethupathy and Union Councillor Palani were at loggerheads for some time now. The trouble surfaced, when the villagers of Pallakkaipatti felicitated Mr Sethupathy at a local temple festival, a couple of days ago.

Enraged over this, supporters of Palani armed with wooden logs and iron rods attacked the residents of Pallakaipatti village today, following which supporters of Sethupathy retaliated.

In the clash which ensued, several people were injured. Four people with serious injuries, were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital, here while others were treated at Government Hospital, Thirumangalam.

Police personnel were deployed in the village. However, no one was arrested in connection with the clash.
