High security in historic temples of TN

Madurai, Oct 12 (UNI) Security has been stepped up at temples and places of worship in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu in the wake of the bomb blast in Ajmer Dargah in Rajasthan, yesterday.

Police sources told UNI here today that security was beefed up from last night with additional security personnel deployed in front of famous temples like Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple here, Dhandayudhapani Swami temple at Palani hills in Dindigul district and Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameswaram.

A security team was constantly monitoring the movement of devotees. Officials of various agencies, including the Special Intelligence Cell, were involved in bandobust duty.

Devotees and their baggages were thoroughly checked with hand-held metal detectors before they entered the temples.

At the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple here, sleuths of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad were deployed with explosive vapour devices that could detect explosive substances concealed in any form. Besides, jammers were installed in the temple to de-activate mobile phones.

All the five majestic towers of the temple have been connected with intercom and wireless network, while speed dome cameras have been installed at vantage points inside the temple for surveillance, they added.
