Panaji, Oct 12 (UNI) Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Francisco Sardinha and BJP maiden member Dr Wilfred Mesquita today filed their respective nomination papers for the October 30 by-election to Mormugao parliamentary constituency in south Goa.

Former Speaker Viswas Satarkar has also filed the papers as a dummy candidate. Two other independents - Hamza Khan and Jawahar L Dias - have also filed the nominations.

The main contestants filed three sets of nomination papers as a precautionary measure.

Today was the last date for filing nominations which would be scrutinised tomorrow. The candidates can withdraw the nominations till October 15.

Mr Sardinha, former Chief Minister and Speaker besides MP, was the choice of the Congress high command after quashing the contention of PWD Minister and SGF Chief Churchil Alemao for giving the ticket to his advocate daughter.

The by-election was necessitated following the resignation of rebel Congress incumbent Churchill in May last to enter state politics on SGF platform which won only two seats.

On the other hand, Dr Mesquita, till recently General Secretary and strategist of the SGF, quit the party along with its Founder President Sidhanath Bouyao.

Both of them were admitted to the BJP yesterday even as the former was given a party ticket to contest from Mormugao. He was formerly a minister in Goa with a good reputation.

The other regional outfits - MGP and the UGDP - have decided to keep away from the current polls.
