Chennai, Oct 11 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in Tamil Nadu and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa today said the Sethusamudram Shipping Channel Project (SSCP) issue was a ''closed'' chapter and there was no chance of its continuance anymore.

In a statement here, she took a dig at Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and Union Shipping Minister T R Baalu saying Mr Karunanidhi was well aware of it and was raising the issue just for the sake of it.

Recalling Mr Baalu's remarks that 70 per cent of the work was over under the project, she asked whether Mr Karunanidhi and Mr Baalu were prepared to arrange a trip for AIADMK MPs, MLAs, scientists and journalists to the channel to know the extent of dredging work done and to what depth.

She said Mr Karunanidhi was well aware that the project was not economically feasible and the channel could not accommodate heavy ships, which were being operated now-a-days.

Ms Jayalalithaa said the project involved dredging to create a 12 metre-deep channel which would only accommodate ships of less than 30,000 tonne.

''At present, big ships of more than 1.50 lakh tonne are being built and are used in large numbers.

''Such ships cannot set sail in this channel'', she added.
