Pesticide company to give Rs 1 lakh as compensation to farmer

Kaithal, Oct 11 (UNI) The District Consumer Redressal Forum here has directed a pesticide company and its dealer to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to a farmer after holding it guilty of supplying him substandard weedicide.

The forum has also directed the dealer to refund to the farmer Rs 6000 the cost of weedicide .

According to information Chander Bhan a farmer of Guhna village filed a complaint in the consumer forum here in which he alleged that he had purchased 10 packets of weedicide from Bala Jee fertilizer Kalayat for Rs 6000 in 2004, to check the growth of weeds in his crop, he sprayed this in his 10 acre wheat crop.

However despite the spray the wheat crop suffered loss as a result of growth of weeds.

He informed the dealer who did not care for his complaint.

The farmer informed the officers of agriculture department who confirmed that his crop had suffered loss due to spray of weedicide.

When the company and its local dealer failed to compensate the farmer, Mr Bhan filed a complaint before the Consumer Forum.

After perusal of the evidence on record and hearing arguments of the farmer, the company and the dealer the forum held the company guilty of deficiency in service by supplying substandard weedicide to the complainant and directed them to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation to the farmer.
