Port Blair, Oct 11 (UNI) Congress candidate Mariam Bibi was today sworn in as Chairperson of the Andaman and Nicobar Zilla Parishad.

Mr G C Joshi, Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman (In-charge) administered the oath.

Along with Ms Bibi, Mr Pradeep Biswas was also sworn in as Upadhyaksh of Zilla Parishad in Andamans for the third year term commencing from today.

''My main focus will be on the sector of education, health, water supply and rural development. Quality of every work will equally important for me,'' Ms Bibi said soon after she was sworn in. Due to the absence of Assembly in the Islands, the post of Zilla Parishad Chairman is considered of a very high profile.

With the Union Territory having three districts, the promulgation of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Panchayat) Regulation, 1994, resulted in the institution of a three-tier Panchayati Raj in the Islands. One Zila Parishad, seven Panchayat Samitis and 67 Gram Panchayats had been set up in the Union territory.

The new Chairperson expressed her discontent over the work done by Zilla Parishad in last two years and assured devoted work towards every remote island of Andaman and Nicobar Chain, which comes under the Zilla Parishad.

The outgoing Chairman of Zilla Parishad R Chidambaram thanked all the members and staff of the Zilla Parishad for their support during his two-year long stint. Earlier, Ms Bibi of Shorepoint Panchayat, South Andaman was elected as the new Chairperson of Zilla Parishad of Andaman and Nicobar Islands at a meeting held at Port Blair on October 1.
