Srinagar, Oct 11 (UNI) Militants, believed to be 'fidayeen' (members of a suicide squad), attacked a hotel on the Boulevard Road here, housing the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

A CRPF spokesman said militants attacked the hotel on the banks of famed Dal Lake here first with grenades and then opened heavy fire on the personnel of the CRPF's 144 battalion lodged there.

However, he said it was too early to give any figure of casualty or the number of militants involved in the attack. Unconfirmed reports put the casualty figure at four so far.

The attack in the heart of Srinagar city came a day ahead of the beginning of a three-day unilateral ceasefire announced by the Muzaffarabad-based United Jehad Council (UJC) headed by Hizbul Mujahideen supremo Syed Salahuddin on the eve of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Further details were awaited.
