Centre concludes arguments in quota case in SC

New Delhi, Oct 11 (UNI) The Centre today asserted in the Supreme Court that equalising measures were mandatory as per the Constitution while justifying the policy of caste-based reservation to OBCs in admission to centrally run educational institutions of higher learning.

Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramanium contended before a five-judge constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan, that caste-based reservation was a starting point for the establishment of casteless society in India.

Mr Subramanium also cited from the judgement of the US and South African Supreme Court to show that racial reservation were provided for 150 years. It was in support of the stand of the Central Government that there can not be a timeframe for the policy of reservation.
