Punjab Police SI acquitted in Khalra murder case

Chandigarh, Oct 8 (UNI) The Punjab and Haryana High Court today allowed the appeal filed by Punjab Police sub inspector Amarjit Singh and acquitted him from the charge of involvement in the killing of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra at Amritsar in 1995.

Division Bench of Justice M S Gill and Justice A N Jindal pronounced the judgement it had reserved last week.

However, the Bench has dismissed appeals filed by other accused, namely Jaspal Singh DSP, Satnam Singh, Jasbir Singh, Prithipal Singh and Surinder Pal Singh, all police officials convicted and sentenced by CBI Special Court at Patiala.

However, they all have been issued notices for October 10 in connection with the prayer of petitioner Paramjit Kaur Khalra, wife of the deceased, seeking enhanced punishment to them in view of the gravity of the crime.

The Bench has referred to other Bench the plea of Mrs Khalra to summon and prosecute former Punjab Police chief K P S Gill as an accused, alleging evidence indicates his involvement too.
