Fear of corruption exposure postponing Panchayat polls: AGP
Guwahati, Oct 8 (UNI) The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), main Opposition in the state, today alleged that the Congress-led state government was postponing Panchayat polls fearing exposure of rampant corruption in the department.
Addressing a press meet, AGP spokesperson Apurba Bhattacharyya said, " The government is in no mood of holding the Panchayat elections as it will expose their corruption. " " The Congress talks about decentralisation of power and Panchayati Raj. But their corrupt practices show otherwise, he added.
He alleged that rampant corruption was going on in the name of Panchayati Raj in the state and elections would expose it.
He said, " That is why the state government has not even started the formal process for the Panchayat election. " The AGP demanded holding of Panchayat polls at the earliest.
The polls, likely to be held in November, could be postponed further with the government stating that three waves of floods had made it impossible to hold the elections.
