2-day conference on 'Thalassemia' from Oct 6

Ahmedabad, Oct 4 (UNI) Gujarat branch of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) and Thalassemics India are jointly organising a two-day regional conference on Thalassemia, the biggest cause of genetic blood disorder, beginning October 6 here.

''Over ten national and international experts on the subject will throw light on the latest trends in the management and prevention of Thalassemia during the regional conference,'' IRCS Gujarat chapter general secretary Dr Madhuben Naik told reporters here yesterday.

The conference, to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, will deliberate on topics like management of long-term complications of Thalassemia, blood transfusion in Thalassemia, bone morrow transplantation in Hemoglobinopathies in India, sickle cell and Thalassemia, and social aspects of Thalassemia, among others, Dr Naik said.

There are an estimated one lakh Thalassemia major patients in the country, he said, adding that there are over 5000 patients in Gujarat, of whom 1000 are in Ahmedabad.
