Digambar leads Goa into paying rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi

Panaji, Oct 2 (UNI) Chief Minister Digambar Kamat led Goa into paying rich tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 138th birth anniversary which is being observed as the International Day of Non-Violence.

The Chief Minister, accompanied by his cabinet colleagues including Transport Minister Pandurang Madkaikar garlanded the statue of the Father of the Nation at Gandhi Chowk, Se Old Goa.

Religious leaders recited verses from Bhagwad Gita, Bible and Quran in this connection.

He also paid tributes to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri whose birth anniversary is also being observed today.

Incidentally, the celebrations coincide with the 60th anniversary of India's Independence, 100th anniversary of Gandhi's Satyagraha Movement and 150th anniversary of the first War of Independence.

Students and teachers, who celebrated Gandhi Jayanthi at different schools and colleges today pledged to rededicating themselves for the cause of non-violence as shown by the late Father of the Nation.
