Gandhi award for 15 village panchayats

Chennai, Oct 1 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government has selected 15 village panchayats for ''Uthamar Gandhi Ooratchi Virudhu'', an award instituted and named after Mahatma Gandhi to encourage the functioning of Village Panchayats.

According to an official release here today, a committee shortlisted 46 panchayats and selected 15 panchayats in various districts as announced by Local Administration Minister M K Stalin in the assembly, during the demand for grants for his department.

The award, which carried Rs five lakh each, would be presented by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi shortly, the release said.
