Country-wide NREGP a revolutinary step: Soz

Srinagar, Sep 30 (UNI) Describing the implementation of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP) in the entire country as a revolutionary step, Union Water Resources Minister Prof Saifuddin Soz said it will help improve remarkably the development profile of backward and far-flung areas.

Inspecting various developmental works in the twin border districts of Baramulla and Kupwara -- once the hub of militants in north Kashmir -- Prof Soz termed the decision of the UPA government to implement the programme across the nation as a revolutionary step.

The minister directed bringing ''Tikarwari Kohal'' (Stream) in Kupwara under the ambit of Special Irrigation Scheme of Union Water Resources Ministry.

Prof Soz also inspected the on-going work on a major tube well at Drugmulla, the completion of which will end water scarcity in the area.

He announced Rs 10 lakh from his Local Area Development Fund for construction of additional class rooms in Degree College Kupwara.

Besides, Rs 10 Lakh were set aside from the Local Area Development Fund for establishment of a botanical garden and a park in the College compound.
