Lt Gen Kumar takes over as GOC of Vajra Corps

Jalandhar, Sep 29 (UNI) Lt Gen S S Kumar takes over as General Officer Commanding of Vajra Corps from Lt Gen Noble Thamburaj, who is taking over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Command from October 1.

Wreath laying, exchange of baton and other farewell programmes were organised on the occasion.

Lt Gen SS Kumar, an alumnus of Military School, Bangalore, National Defence Academy and Indian Military Academy, was commissioned on June 13, 1971 into the Brigade of the Guards.

During his illustrious career, the GOC has held various important staff, institutional and command assignments. He was also ADC to the President of India from December 1976 to March 1979.

The GOC has commanded a Guards battalion in Counter Insurgency operations, mountain brigade and was Inspector General of the Assam Rifles (IGAR) in Nagaland. For his gallant actions, he was awarded the Sena Medal while commanding a battalion in Jammu and Kashmir.

During his tenure as IGAR, he was awarded the Vishist Seva Medal for his distinguished service.

Mrs Preeti Kumar, wife of Lt Gen SS Kumar, also took over the charge of President Vajra Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA).
